Bio
Marc Lewis grew up in western Washington; the PNW, as it does, cultivated a familiarity with and love for nature. An enthusiasm for making was always present but not fully realized - he explored drawing, woodcarving, music, construction, writing, and everything in between, in wildly varying capacities. While this resulted in a lack of a clearly dominant field of interest, the breadth of knowledge it required eventually blossomed into a holistic jack-of-all-trades mentality that is now integral to his work. He started playing guitar at age seven and played in jazz bands starting in middle school, continuing into college; throughout that time he also played alto saxophone, electric and upright bass, violin, and symphonic percussion.
He attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, from 2011-2015, where he studied abroad in Rome and Seville, dabbled in theater (performance, lighting, and sound design), hosted a radio show, led a small jazz combo, held a consultant position in the library's Academic Technology Studio, and ultimately earned a BA in Studio Art with a focus in ceramics and a minor in Spanish. His first full-time job after college - managing a print shop in Chicago - provided an entry into the world of bookbinding and its many ancillary crafts. He started his teaching career at the tail end of the pandemic, teaching various art, music, 3D design, and wellness courses at a private school for grades 6-12 in the Chicago suburbs.
Marc's oeuvre includes (but is not limited to) ceramics, woodworking, luthiery, bookbinding, leathercraft, writing, drawing, digital art, and music composition, performance, and production. In 2023 he moved from Chicago to central Illinois, where he currently lives with his wife, Meghan, and their dogs, Jacob and Juniper, and teaches art and music remotely at an online private school.
